Dramatic waves and wind with sunshine as storm Francis lashes Gunwalloe on the Lizard Peninsular in Cornwall.
My story...
Our Staycation has prompted us to visit some beautiful places in Cornwall. The ones that are a bit further from home and a little off our beaten track and even more precious because of this. Quarantine and lockdown has a silver lining enabling us to re-discover these treasures.
Where am I? Gunwalloe is located on the West coast of the Lizard near its base and is owned and looked after by the National Trust. Address: Gunwalloe, near Helston, Cornwall, TR12 7QE
About:
The picturesque church of Wynwallow is tucked away at the northern end of the beach and is also known as the Church of Storms. The church is the only church in Cornwall to be located on a beach and has resulted in the beach also being known as church cove. Gunwalloe Church Cove has a lovely sandy beach surrounded by sand dunes and cliffs. A short walk to the top of the hill will reward you with stunning views with the sea on both sides.
A little History....
The church is named after a 5th century Breton saint known as St. Winwaloe. It is one of the oldest in Cornwall and can be found listed in the doomesday book. The earliest mention of a church at Gunwalloe comes from 1332 when it was mentioned as a chapel connected to Breage.
More information can be found here.
A little drama..
Gunnwalloe on The Lizard relived its smuggling past when Aidan Turner and a hoard of other cast members and extras descended to film night-time ship wrecking scenes. An attractive sandy cove overlooked by the tiny church of St Wynwallow.
