Introduction

Coastal sailing along the Cornish coast offers far more than simply travelling from one destination to another. The sheltered waters of the Fal Estuary and Helford River, with their secluded creeks and unspoilt landscapes, have long inspired writers such as Daphne du Maurier. Beyond these calm inlets, Falmouth Bay opens into a sweeping stretch of coastline, delivering exhilarating sailing routes from the Lizard Peninsula to Falmouth Harbour. Even a short coastal passage here can feel like a true Cornish sailing adventure.

This page is a place to illustrate the joys, challenges and community of coastal sailing in Cornwall. I will share details of the amazing sailing clubs and their communities, including opportunities to get involved. I’ll also be sharing practical information regarding weather and tides and the experiences that make this part of the coast so special.

The clubs

At the heart of it all are the local clubs, such as the six host clubs (Flushing Sailing Club, Helford River Sailing Club, Mylor Yacht Club, Restronguet Sailing Club, Royal Cornwall Yacht Club, St. Mawes Sailing Club) of the Port of Falmouth Sailing Association‘s Falmouth Sailing Week. Each club brings its own character and together they provide an incredible range of sailing opportunities, whether that is exhilarating racing and the chance to crew and learn alongside others, or support with coaching newcomers, to quiet evenings cruising alone or longer trips meandering with a flotilla. There is a strong and welcoming, inclusive sailing community, shaped as much by the people as by the place itself.

You will also find links through to my own blog posts under coastal sailing, where I share time spent on the water, practical notes, and the significant moments that often stay with you longest. Much of this centres around Sailing Ithaca, where familiar routes still have a habit of offering something new.

Boat hire

For those looking to begin, or to build confidence, there are plenty of ways to step aboard. Local providers offer yacht charter, skippered sails, and lessons, making it possible to experience these waters at your own pace. Whether it is a first introduction or a chance to develop existing skills, there is always a way to get closer to the water.
